Minimum wage for 2026: HUF 322,800 – what it means for proving subsistence

Issue 157 of the Magyar Közlöny (official journal) of 23 December 2025 published the government decree on the 2026 mandatory minimum wage and guaranteed minimum wage. The immigration rules set no income threshold fixed in forint for family reunification or the national residence card; the authority examines whether subsistence is secured. The minimum wage does, however, appear expressly in the implementing decree for one residence title.

Malta: minimum wage of EUR 229.44 a week in 2026, students must show more funds

The Maltese Government Gazette of 22 December 2025 carried Legal Notice 289 of 2025, which sets the national minimum wage at EUR 229.44 a week from 1 January 2026. For study residence, Identità (the Maltese immigration agency) requires proof of 75% of the minimum wage for every month of study, so the financial condition for students also rises.

Commission report: around 107,000 passports from Caribbean citizenship-by-investment programmes

On 19 December 2025 the European Commission adopted its eighth report under the visa suspension mechanism (COM(2025) 792). Alongside the Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership countries, the report examines the Eastern Caribbean and Latin American countries, and classifies the Caribbean investor citizenship schemes as a security risk for the Schengen area.

The revised visa suspension mechanism is published: investor citizenship becomes a new ground

Regulation (EU) 2025/2441 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 10 December 2025 and entered into force on 30 December 2025. It revises the suspension mechanism of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806: the EU can suspend visa-free travel faster and in a more targeted way, and investor citizenship schemes are named as a new ground.
