Spain: 7,909,008 foreign nationals held a valid residence document on 30 June 2026

According to a Europa Press report of 17 September 2026 based on data from Spain's Permanent Observatory on Immigration (OPI), 7,909,008 foreign nationals held a valid residence document in Spain on 30 June 2026, 7.4% more than a year earlier.

What happened

According to the report, of the 7,909,008 valid documents, 3,885,177 are permits under the general immigration regime, 3,825,658 are registration certificates of EU or EFTA citizens, and 198,173 are TIE cards under the UK Withdrawal Agreement.

Of the holders of general-regime permits, 35% come from Central and South America, 34% from Africa, 15% from Asia and 14% from non-EU European countries. The largest annual increases were among Colombian (+46.6%) and Peruvian (+46.3%) nationals. 94,465 foreign nationals held a valid study permit, 4.5% more than a year earlier; growth over five years was 122.3%. According to the report, the number of Russian students fell by 36.6%.
