Spanish minimum wage 2026: EUR 1,221 a month, digital nomad visa threshold EUR 2,849
On 19 February 2026 the BOE (Spain's official gazette) published the royal decree setting the minimum wage (SMI) for 2026. The minimum wage rose to EUR 1,221 a month, with retroactive effect from 1 January 2026. As the income requirement of the Spanish digital nomad visa is 200% of the minimum wage, the threshold has risen to EUR 2,849 a month.

Background
What happened
The Spanish Council of Ministers adopted Royal Decree 126/2026 on the 2026 minimum wage on 17 February 2026, and the BOE published it on 19 February. Under the decree the minimum wage (SMI) is EUR 40.70 a day or EUR 1,221 a month, which corresponds to gross income of EUR 17,094 a year. The increase is 3.1%, and the decree applies with retroactive effect to the period from 1 January to 31 December 2026; according to the government it affects around 2.5 million workers.
The minimum wage also affects immigration requirements: the income requirement of the visa and residence permit for international teleworkers – in practice digital nomads – issued under Law 14/2013 (Ley 14/2013) is set by the Large Companies Unit (UGE-CE) of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration as a percentage of the SMI: the applicant must show 200% of the current SMI per month, at least 75% for the first family member and 25% for each additional family member, in gross amounts before deductions (tax, social security).
According to the consular information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the digital nomad visa issued at a consulate is valid for one year, or – if the authorisation is shorter – for the validity of the residence authorisation. Those who wish to stay after the visa expires may apply for a residence authorisation within the sixty calendar days before expiry.
