Croatia raises the maintenance-funds threshold for third-country nationals to 57%
On 8 January 2026 the Croatian government amended the regulation on the maintenance funds of third-country nationals. The general threshold for temporary stay rose from 50% to 57% of the previous year's average net salary, and a new 60% rate applies to temporary stay for other purposes. The amendment was published in Narodne novine (official gazette) on 9 January 2026.

Background
What happened
Since 2021 the government regulation on the maintenance funds of third-country nationals has set the monthly amount to be shown for every ground of temporary and long-term residence. In 2021 the base was 50% of the previous year's average monthly net salary.
The amendment adopted on 8 January 2026 and published on 9 January raised the base threshold to 57% and added a new paragraph 4 to Article 2: an applicant for temporary stay for other purposes must show 60% of the average net salary each month. According to Index.hr, Interior Minister Davor Božinović explained the change by the need for consistency with the Aliens Act, a correction to the transposition of the EU directive on long-term residents, and alignment with the 2025 minimum wage of about EUR 750 net (EUR 970 gross). Based on the 2024 average salary, the base amount rose from EUR 659 to EUR 751.26, and for other purposes it is EUR 790.80.
The rule for digital nomads – 2.5 times the previous year's average net salary, plus 10% per family member – is unchanged. The question-and-answer page of the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) cites both numbers of the regulation (14/21 and 3/26) and already gives the 2026 amounts at the new rates.

What it means for you
- For digital nomads: the 2.5 multiplier that applies to you has not changed; the amendment concerns the other grounds in the regulation.
- Stay for other purposes: if you are considering Croatian temporary stay not as a digital nomad but on the ground of other purposes, from January 2026 you must count on the higher 60% threshold.
- For family members: the 10% increase per family member is built on the new, higher base amount, so the financial condition for family applications has also risen.
